The Williamstown Lighthouse is situated at Gellibrand Point. The lighthouse has had many incarnations, firstly as a lighthouse, then a timeball tower, then a lighthouse again. The Timeball Tower is how ships, moored offshore, could accurately set their chronometers. At precisely 1.00pm each day, the ball at the top of the tower would descend slowly down its shaft.
